Indoor CBD Flower
If you’ve ever spent a day out in terrible weather – whether it’s too hot or too windy, or the sky is glaring so strongly you can’t even open your eyes, or the rain is falling diagonally – then you’ll know how quickly it can put you in the wrong mood.
Now, hemp plants don’t have the same mood changes as humans – at least, not that we know of, anyway. But what they do have in common with us is a very specific preference for weather, temperature, and light exposure. They’re not as picky as rare orchids, but they’re also nowhere near as hardy as a humble potato.
So, if those preferences aren’t met, the plants can’t thrive like they should.
This is why some of the highest quality CBD flowers are grown indoors, where the weather is always comfortable and everything is tailored to the plants’ pretty specific requirements.
How Indoor CBD Flowers Are Grown
Indoor growing spaces are like blank canvases. Away from natural daylight cycles and unpredictable weather conditions, it’s possible for growers to cherry-pick the very best of everything for their plants.
Controlling Light
Plants love light, and hemp particularly so – but only the right kind of light at the right time of day and year.
Outdoors, hemp plants follow natural light cycles: longer days during the summer, which is when they germinate, followed by longer nights in the autumn, which is their cue to flower.
Outdoors, light can be insufficient if it’s a cloudy and overcast period. This can mean flowering happens prematurely. Alternatively, longer summers can prevent plants from flowering at the expected time.
Despite the fact that hemp is a natural plant found in the great outdoors, the great outdoors itself rarely offers the ideal conditions for it to thrive. By controlling light cycles indoors, it’s possible for growers to cultivate the highest quality CBD flowers possible with stronger concentrations of trichomes, which are responsible for resin-production. More resin equals better potency.
Different coloured lights also produce very different results. Red coloured light promotes photosynthesis, which means you get more growth for the same investment of time, while blue light creates shorter, stouter plants that don’t waste as much energy on growing long stems. Green light reaches further, making sure lower leaves still get plenty of exposure and, as a result, that the whole plant is overall healthier.
Creating Ideal Conditions
Warmth is essential for root development, allowing the plant to quickly establish itself in the soil. As you can imagine, this isn’t always possible in the great outdoors – particularly in the Northern hemisphere – but indoor environments mean growers can maintain the ideal temperature range (between 24°C and 27°C) for root growth.
Since hemp plants mature through the summer months and into the autumn, however, they prefer temperature to drop slightly as they grow. Wherever you are in the world, weather doesn’t always follow a linear pattern like that, so, again, indoor plants get the benefit of a smoother ‘transition’ as they mature.
The same goes for humidity levels, with younger plants preferring higher humidity that reduces slightly as they grow.
Without any wind or lashing rain, the more delicate aromatic elements of the plants are better preserved during growing and harvesting. More terpenes mean a more interesting taste and smell.
Finally, if you remember back to your biology lessons, you’ll know that plants use CO2 during photosynthesis, turning it into the sugars that enable them to grow (along with water). Some growers will increase the amount of CO2 and artificial light in a room. It’s a tricky balancing act but, done right, this can produce higher yields of better quality buds.
All of these conditions represent gentle, non-intrusive ways of boosting a plant’s growing power without playing the role of the mad scientist or pumping them full of unnatural chemicals.
The Benefits of Indoor CBD Flower
- Growing conditions are totally under the control of expert growers
Nature doesn’t typically provide ideal conditions for growers, whether they’re planting potatoes or hemp plants. While adapting to unpredictable weather conditions and suboptimal temperatures is possible, ensuring the highest quality requires growers to control as many variables as possible. Indoors, with full control over temperature, humidity, light exposure, and soil quality, growers can create those ideal conditions for the best possible yields. - Fewer crops are wasted to pests and disease
When crops are outdoors, growers face a difficult question: should they accept that much of their hard work will go to waste, or reduce the quality of their produce with harsh pesticides and chemical treatments?
Indoors, crops are far safer from these problems. They require more attention in other ways – for instance, to ensure they get enough light – but growers often see that as a worthwhile investment against wasted time, water, and effort. - The more delicate elements of the plant are better preserved
CBD flowers are covered in terpenes, which are the chemical compounds that produce those distinctive smells and tastes that vary from one strain to another. They are delicate, and far better preserved indoors, where plants aren’t exposed to high-speed winds and falling rain. For those experienced with CBD, this makes all the difference, resulting in a flower that is brimming with complex flavours and plenty of depth.
